View Full Version : Engine ?

Well I have been throwing around the idea of doing an engine swap this summer in my 82'

It has a built 22r ( which will probably go into my 1970 celica) and is a little underpowered.

There are many options and I am not putting a I6 out of a jeep in there !

any suggestions ?

I would like to keep the Toyota transmission and T-case if possible.

I am just looking for some ideas and feedback. :confused0006:

Thanks !!

The 4.3 L is always a nice swap and it keeps your fuel mileage good plus parts are cheap and plentiful, it also keeps it very lite if you put in a Vortec....just a thought

Get a 1989 Toyota Cresseda Motor they are torquey bastards and have stronger bottom end's.

or how about a 3.4 swap

I'd just put a 22RE in it, easy, simple, more power, work off camber, won't break to many parts.

There's not many choices if you want to keep the trans and t-case and not break stuff. Adapters aren't cheap, either.

I vote for all or nothing. Either swap EFI onto your existing 22R, or swap in a V-8 along with it's own transmission and t-case. But then you'd probably want a D-60 and 14 bolt.....

I can get a running 302 complete with ecm for $300

Out of a 5.slow mustang.

Or a supercharged 3.0 out of a thunderbird SC.

^^ Those are nice, but I don't see what it will do what a 350 sbc won't do.

I more and more believe in the KISS method (keep it stupid simple).

Advance adapters has all sorts of adapters to mate a sbc to various toyota transmissions.

I have a 5 spd & transfercase from a 2000 tacoma kicking around. Advance adapters has a bellhousing to mate that to a sbc.

weight that suckers aluminium not cast pig iron like a sbc
every ones always says put a chevy in it
a 302 ford is lighter
narower
and the distributer is on the front
so you can nount it farter back without cutting and beating on firewall

I am not arguing about the 302. North West Offroad has a bellhousing kit to mount the 302 to toy transmissions: http://www.northwestoffroad.com/parts/manualadapters.html

Advance adapters' kits go with the sbc.

My take on the sbc is that after trail armor etc. a 100 pounds more or less makes little difference anymore.
Parts are cheap and easy to come by which is good for a vehicle that gets beat on.
Maintaining the manual transmission is nice also, which is far easier to do with the 302/sbc options.

I was hoping to do it to my '91 4Runner about 10yrs ago, never got around to it though. I was also looking at the 302.
There used to be an adapter to connect the mustang t5 transmission to the geardriven toy transfercase. Can't find it anymore.

A full trim 1uz is no more then 100 pounds heavier then what was original in the car and far more reliable and smoother then any chev motor. The only other comparable American motor would be an LS. A 1UZ is a fraction of the cost of that. You can get 1UZ for under $500.
To put the weight in perspective the one I am building I'm putting in a vq35 and that is only 20 pounds heavier then the original motor.

i had an sc400 with the 1uz, had 465k on it and ran mint, they are an amazing motor. you can also pick them up for around 500$

and im not concerned about any lag with the hx, or running out at 6500.

I have a container with some 1KD-FTV's, 2KD-FTV's, 2AD-FTV and four 1VD-FTV twin turbo v8's. You wouldnt imagine the super low milage engines and wreaked cars they have in the UAE. The 1VD-FTV would rip in a first gen. 261 hp at 3400 rpm and 479 ft·lb @ 1200-2600 rpm

a buddy had a 4.3 then swapped in a 350 with tbi and got better millage in his 4runner. so i sujest 350 or a supra 6

7-mge or a 5-mge out of a supra. make good power and a fairly common swap for the 22re
