they will be different lengths, needing driveshaft, crossmember and floor boards mods. but it will work

Almost postive that it's a direct swap.

If your only swaping the gearbox like Dirka said 99% sure its a go but if your also swapping the transfer case the top shift and forward shift different so you would need floor mods...

Fairly sure the 82 is the same shift as the 87.. the 81 4 speed was different.

get a tape measure and measure them first.

the tranny from the 82, will be 5inches or so shorter.

there is two lengths of 5 speed

pre 84 will have the shorter tranny
84 and up will have the longer tranny

You could make it work, it will bolt in but your tcase x member will be too far back to line up with the bolts in the bottem of the tcase. You would have to build a new x member to make it work.

Wow, I have swapped countless transmissions in lots of trucks, never had a problem.

Guess I just lucked out. :confused0006:

I have a trans/ Tcase from a 87 4 runner to go inro my 82;, guess I better measure it first.

The 82' pops out almost every gear....:D

Yeah, take a look, thats why the 1st gens have a shorter front driveshaft and longer rear then the 84+ trucks/4runners

The 1982 should have the L50 which is prone to input bearing failure. Then in 83 toyota came out with the L52. (both top shift). 1984 through 1987 generally had the G52 or G54 (Forward shift) or w56 1985 - 95.

I have an 85 runner which usually runs a W56 attached to a RF1A t-case.

For a spare which has bolted right in when I had problems, I have a G58 which has a VF1A (chain drive). (This swapped right in) It has been a great spare and I used it for a year and a half. Drive-shafts all stayed the same. If you need it, you can come get it, let me know.

As for strength, I never questioned it as they run this t-case behind the V6 units. People just dont care for it as you just cant run it as a dual t-case without spending a lot of money.
