View Full Version : flatdeck sidekick project
11-28-2010, 09:59 AM
well originally i wanted to get a samurai and flatdeck that but all of the samurai's could find where totally peices of shit, or way over priced so i picked up a running sidekick for 1100, then the project started, i bought it stock, then put a 3 inch calmini lift in it, now im cutting it all apart
i will get pictures up soon
11-28-2010, 10:05 AM
Cool project, gonna put a box on or just a deck?
maybe leave an access panel for the fuel pump/sender.
11-28-2010, 12:59 PM
yeah between the frame there is going to be a tool box with a removable bottom so i can do that and there is going to be a small air tank going below the tool box above the axle
11-28-2010, 01:19 PM
kool keep the pics coming

11-28-2010, 04:50 PM
i gotta stop buy and see it in person
11-28-2010, 06:19 PM
11-28-2010, 06:21 PM
i really thought taking all of the rust out from behind the seats, and making a new floor pan would be alot harder, it turned out to be pretty easy
11-28-2010, 07:02 PM
Cool, that's looking real sweet so far.
11-28-2010, 07:05 PM
rad, whats your plans for the rear deck?
SAS and some reduction in the near future? or is this a hunting truck?
11-28-2010, 07:23 PM
Keep the pics coming
11-28-2010, 07:33 PM
im planning of making a deck will be like 3'6", between the frames im going to make a tool box to put my chainsaw and other stuff, remobable bottom, to acess fuel take and eventual air tank
11-29-2010, 04:35 PM
Looks like a cool project.
11-29-2010, 06:01 PM
gonna look pretty sick when done
11-29-2010, 07:32 PM
Nice work man! No tubing bender I'm guessing...
11-29-2010, 09:03 PM
yeah i have a cheep one but it wont bend nice 90's so i just bought elbows, i am a b ticket welder, so the welding is not a problem for me
11-29-2010, 10:22 PM
Your gonna want to deaden that back panel. The harmonics will drive you crazy. Otherwise, looking not bad.
12-05-2010, 05:55 PM
tomorrow i should be picking up some lexan to make the rear window out of, then just have to find a roof from a recker or somewhere like that then the cab is done for now until paint

Rad idea ... keep us updated
12-05-2010, 06:37 PM
well here is a couple pics of the back wall and the window boxhttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0169.jpghttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0170.jpghttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0172.jpg
12-05-2010, 06:43 PM
Is that tubing tied into the frame to or just the body?
12-05-2010, 07:16 PM
it is not tied into the frame but i am thinking i might make 2 brackets off the frame that go to the tube, but i am not sure yet, i am going to wait till i put the 2 inch body lift in, would you say it is better to tie it in or not?
12-05-2010, 08:00 PM
I'm no expert but from what I have heard you want to keep your body and frame isolated because they move separately. It might rip your body welds off if you join it to the frame. :dontknow:
12-05-2010, 08:16 PM
that was what i thought, i always knew they moved seperatly, but was not sure if poeple wanted to stop that by connecting them,
12-05-2010, 08:41 PM
I would just weld the hoop to the frame without a bodylift cause there will be little flex. But with a bodylift I would not tie it into the frame. Build a separate rollbar or hoop if you wanted extra protection
12-09-2010, 09:13 PM
12-09-2010, 09:35 PM
Really nice work man, looking great!
12-09-2010, 10:17 PM
looking good, back window turned out very nice!!
12-10-2010, 11:18 PM
since the stupid sidekick plastic roofs are like 350$ new and there are not to be found used, i am forced to make the roof as well, so i will have pictures of that tomorrow, planning on making little storage bins that hang from the lid
Looks nice don't forget to drill the holes in the lexan oversized or it will crack [cheers]
12-12-2010, 12:34 AM
yeah dont worry on the lexan it says drill over sized, so the boles are 7/32 and the bolts are a letter size but its right around 1/8
12-12-2010, 10:53 AM
I like the project idea, looking forward to seeing where you go with it from here. Looks great so far. Keep the roll bar separate from the frame just like you have it but maybe add an external cage to the frame later if you want.
Have fun with it.
12-15-2010, 08:59 PM
12-16-2010, 10:21 AM
That looks nice man, coming along quick
12-17-2010, 06:20 PM
it was strange i saw another sidekick that is like this but it looks like he used some rear hatch from like a exploder or trailblazer or something like that, but the deck he made for it was kind of hokey
12-18-2010, 10:29 AM
There is one of these kinda chopped up suzukis in Kelowna to, looks nice from 30 feet away, but not so much when you get closer

12-18-2010, 07:31 PM
dont gotta worry about that sunroof on low trees.
12-18-2010, 08:48 PM
Good work on the Sidekick.
Are you making a shorter flat-deck with round lights like my Toyota truck?
12-18-2010, 09:10 PM
well it wont be as big as the one on your truck, but it will be a small tube deck with a hinge'n tire rack so the tire can sit flat on the deck or hang off the back when i get some bucks to throw on the back, or like a load of wood, like the poison spider ones for the jeeps, yeah i got a turn tail brake led light then 2 flood lights for the reverse, and in the middle there is going to be a 3' x 3' tool box that is about 11" deep
12-19-2010, 07:53 AM
that thing is looking great. where about in langley ya living, should stop by and take a look and what not since i just moved into langley myself
12-19-2010, 09:25 AM
Looking great so far...Is the sun roof still removable?
12-19-2010, 02:14 PM
yeah i can remove the roof
12-19-2010, 07:39 PM
here is some more of the expected but unwanted fun of buying a 1100 $ kick, it would be so easy if the floor was flat or not rubber coated underneath just cant grind the paint back everywhere so its a bit of a fire fight as im welding weld a bit grab the water bottle and spray that rubber coating firehttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0184.jpghttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0183.jpghttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0185.jpghttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0186.jpghttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0187.jpg
12-19-2010, 07:54 PM
so is it all tig welded ?:dontknow:
12-20-2010, 06:30 PM
mmm burning rubber
12-20-2010, 10:04 PM
looking great, did alot of that kinda rust cutting and such on my friends sideflip and oh what a pain
12-21-2010, 08:33 PM
yeah all tigged, thats what i have at home i want a nice 251,or 252 but not enought space
12-22-2010, 07:35 PM
if you want to use my MIG i can bring it over so you can weld stuff up faster etc. where abouts in langley you live?
12-23-2010, 04:09 PM
i think im fine my neibor offered me his if i want it but i like how clean tiggin is, the cab is basicly all done for now, im going to start getting the deck started
12-26-2010, 08:35 PM
here is the start i did a few days ago, i hope to get more work done to it tuesdayhttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0189.jpghttp://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa396/tnairn91/100_0188.jpg

01-05-2011, 05:00 PM
well some plans have changed, i think im going to get some of the metal tomorrow, but only the lid on the tool box is going to be alum, they wanted 400$ for the pieces for the lid, i think that is a little too much for my suzuki, so steel is it,
