I'm feeling left out seeing all these threads about the Kootenays, thought I'd throw in a few of my own. :D

Camped near Fish/Bear lakes on Highway 31A between NewDenver and Kaslo and did 2 days of quadding and exploring mines. Didn't cover a 1/4 of the trails around there so can't wait to get back next year, going to make it a week long trip next time.

Day 1

First mine was the Lucky Jim which was huge in it's day, only explored the bottom level and we covered about 4000' of underground tunnel.

Thought I'd try a manual setting on the camera and had the ISO too high so many of the pics in the mines are over exposed. :ballsmack

Went over from Retallack to Cody, covered about 30 switchbacks on that route. Saw an old Fairbanks Morse diesel engine at Cody, would have been cool to hear that thing running.

More mines and lots of views from the ridges though the fog and clouds never lifted enough for any really good shots.

Day 2 started out up London Ridge on the north side of the highway, checked out a couple old mines and travelled more mining trails that were more like goat trails somehow attached to cliffs! Then in the afternoon we went up Carpenter creek (Sandon valley) and up to Idaho peak ridge. Didn't hike to the lookout but found an old mining trail that brought us within 1/2 mile of it on the ridge. So many mines and old trails that we ran out of time before checking all them out.

Yah that's Idaho Peak lookout but from a different viewpoint. Most people (city yuppies) drive up the main road (saw a couple of front wheel drive cars there  ) to the 2 different parking lots. We found this old mining trail that headed to the ridge and we were actually closer to it then the parking lots :D

If I can get enough guys together next year to clear a path through that avy field it will open another mining trail that will loop from the Retallack-Cody road back down to the highway closer to Kaslo, pretty big though.

We should plan an event for next summer, camp out for a few days and lots of riding.

I'll only go underground if I can feel a draft or if it's only a short ways in. Need an air tester but they're $1500 and another $1500 for a calibration kit.

i think that old 6947 is coming to kamloops next for restoration. Would all these mines be from the days of sledge and chisel mining or did any of them have air/hyrdaulic tools?

Most of them started out as the old Sledge hammer drilling but throughout their life they would have been worked with air. The only one I think may have been all hand worked is the old one on London ridge, the other one up there was worked into the '70s or '80s with air.
