well, after a long stressful time trying to find everything i need to run my 4 speed (on a budget) i was able to find a 85 460 flywheel and bellhousing, so i will be picking that up on monday and starting to get this thing done. got the diff under the truck, rolling now. waiting fro motor mounts and all the motor goodies to come in.

You ever think of getting these to keep the mud n shit outta your diffs?
I think they make em for d60s, they go on the axle shafts into the outer ends of the diffs,

Gots lots done last weekend and this week, motors pulled axles pulled
leafs are pulled. here are some photos of whats been done

http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2429-Copy.jpg
axle pulled and fire wall finished with clean wires!
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2430.jpg
gutted axle and stripped all, wire wheel in process here, stock shock mounts getting the boot!
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2438.jpg
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2446-Copy.jpg
damn this thing was dirty and in need of a rebuild! stave kills!
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2448.jpg
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2449-Copy.jpg
the axle tubes you could not see through, it was bad, to much sand and mud! tubes look like they took a shit, i used a 2'' wire wheel attached to a few extensions and gave'er
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2450.jpg

http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2458.jpg
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2457.jpg
then used a broomstick and cloth and cleaned them out!
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2459.jpg
alll clean!
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2460.jpg
major clean to everything, all got wire wheel then a solvent scrub!
finished and painted!
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2463.jpg
grinded the old stock mounts off and ready for mockup and new ones
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2464.jpg
gave it a coat of primer last night and some gloss black,
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2465.jpg
here are the leafs, i may use
54'' eye to eye. and off set by about 1 3/8''
they are rears so i cut the center pin to take the over load out
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/IMG_2447.jpg
they are 2'' longer than my 52'' stock ones, so i can run a 6'' shackle and will sit just right for mock up. steering might be an issue, but hopefully can make it easier to clear the cross member.

todays list
finished axle rebuild. all new seals and bearing
new kingpin rebuild kit
finished custom leafs
dry fit and see how things will work![36]
more to come!

happy pants what a great idea!
so slowly but shirley shes getting close, managed to get a 460 flywheel
getting resurfaced right now, then just need to make a 3/8 spacer plate for the 400m bellhousing, and this could go in soon!
got the motor back together, rv cam edlebrock intake new dist, coil blah blah
you get the idea, nothing special just your basic build.
also got some ubolts made for the front diff, and made some 3/8 plates for the ubolts. notched the webbing for the drivers inside ubolt and put it all back together with some fresh paint.

gotta run my fuel lines and electric fuel pump today and run and my hoses, and hookup my clutch linkage. photos and hopefully a good video to come!

jordanbennett
09-04-2011, 09:45 PM
Ran my fuel line today, and installed my holley "blue" electric fuel pump with regulator. seems to work great. installed the fuel pump as close to the tank as possible with out any 90' fittings and ran the reg as close to the carb as possible. seems to work best that way from what ive read.
installed new heater core lines and test fitting some rad hoses i got
she starts and runs (screams) just headers. need to find my electric choke wire. not sure where she be, just a few more days and this be moveable.
heres some shot and video of first start up! enjoy

that looks like the push pull style pitman arm
you need one off a crossover steering truck
maybe the 2wd one will work if you still have it worth a try
used a 2wd one on the ranger and exploder i did sas on
needed a flat arm to make steering work
not sure of sector shaft size
maybe one from a tbi truck the f 350 still used leafs

my brother ended up converting to a 2wd chevy steering box with the cross over and it works great,he has 12inch leaf lift so im sure it would work for your steering, you have to fab a mounting plate but besides that its pretty simple [cheers]

why did he use a chevy steering gear?

i think the simple solution is high steer. northwest fab makes nice kits, its worth every penny and is tough. those stock tie rods bend if you look at them wrong especially with 40's

say whhhaaaat! this thing is going to be beat to the ground, strictly a wheeling machine, high steer would be nice, but the crossmember limits me to what i can do, i may cut her cut, but crossover is the only light at the end on the tunnel.

pulled the truck into the shop today to start the rear end, use the crane to pull it around(hard when it has no steering and not running) but managed to get it in, pulled the stock diff and mounts and started to mock up my inboard brackets, original wheel base is 133'' and now it is 126'' moved it forward 7''
starting to look at where it going to sit, and it going to be tall i think, may have to make smaller shackles or something maybe cut my rear mounts to sit higher

The way the mount are mounted on the bottom of the frame is going to create flex , if the truck is going to get beat on . Dont know your finish plans , could box the frame in and tie the frame sides together .Did you figure the steering out ? Keep up the good work .

x2 box the frame by the hangers [36]

yes sir, already started that today, unfortunatly I'm on call today and had to go into work. so didn't get much done from last nightgo fuck yourself
but started making plates for the boxing of the frame i got a photo here,
of what they sorta look like inside the frame(forgot to take photo)
but the green outline is where its tacked now, centred over the eye of the hanger, the red is another option i was thinking, same width as the hanger.
what do you guys think as far as location. thanks again.
steering may be okay, gonna try and find a high steer arm and pitman arm and do a mock up to see if it works, anyone got one laying around:D ?

had some process, got the hangers welded in and springs hung, diff under and spring perches tacked. cut 15''out of the rear end of the frame off. wheel base is 124'' compared to the original 133''. need to do some gusseting but here are some shots. with the weight on it sits 2ish'' higher in the rear so with cage and all should sit nice and level.

well didn't get much done today, was busy most of the day.
managed to get the shocks mounted with custom hoops made from 1 1/4'' sced 40 and tabs made from 2'' x 1/4'' flat bar. look great and
work even better. really nice and stiff. i think the valving is stiffer than usual toyota ones. its great, measured up for crossmember and ordering high steer on monday, also looking at this fuel cell, it will be too small. offer up!
heres some shots and poser flex shots too, seeing where to do bump stops.

well picked up some sliders from trail gear, can't make em that cheap. buut not to sure how i like them, here are some shots what you think, in more out more, more angle, take em off. Also trying to fit this wrap bar, having a hard time. might have to make another one or so, does it matter if i run the shackle up or down? length parallel with d shaft etc?

That upper mount is going to cause some binding with the front half of your leaf springs. The jonny joint is good but should be mounted to a shackle to allow some for/aft movement while still locking in the angle in place.

unfortunately its not my shop, its my buddy g pa's, he's got his model a tucked up in the corner she's hard to see. were bugging him to pull it out and finish it.
but soon enough i will have a shop with a few friends, gonna be doing fab work for people again[36].. havnt finished putting guessets in but just welded to the frame i can jump up and down on them and they flex about 3/4'' going to put gussets in and hopefully solve that problem.

alright as for what to do in the rear, i was planning on putting a very simple cage inside but i may have some problems. I'm tall.... and dont have a lot of clearance. gonna do sue more measurements but i had a few ideas for the rear cage
http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/ford2011.jpgsomething similar to this, and run bedsides that work on a hinge that i can dove in and pull out for street use. or.....http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/ford20112.jpgmaybe something like this, flat deck with some sheet metal sides and little cage, i dunno
for the front

what are you planing for final gear reduction? dual cases? with that flat bed and armour this is turning into a serious full size trail killer

I foresee chromo shafts in your future though with those tires.

if you build the bed cage why not finish with a exo or continue the cage into the cab, build the flat deck and not just tube it. with the front bumper, cut the grill an recess your winch in the grill and push the bumper as far as you can inwards to give you the best approach angle.

im not to sure what gears will go with what, havnt got that far, prob dual t's
probably going to go with bed sides and make them so i an drove them and pull them out for street. yeah i will get around to cromos but for now they should be alright. just bring spares.:D

I know the dana 60 will have a 5.13 or 5.38 gear set

my 14bolt going in my buggy is getting a 5.13 gear set to match my front 60 and I'm sure 5.38 is available

go with a set of quality 35 spline chromos up front when you do, stock 14 bolt shafts will take the abuse just keep a spare set of shafts

I'd go with duals or if you got cash a atlas, front digs are awesome and you will never hurt the case.

I found my 203/205 setup in my old blazer to be shitty, short of a rare lowmax 205 gear set the reduction just isn't enough for crawling unless you have a auto in front of it.

have you considered a fuel injection setup on your motor?

5:13? dont think so.. think its just reg 4:10s in her right now. gears are for another time tho. i really wanna just drive it for a while the way it is for a while, save and buy a black box when i can. the motor should have no problem moving 38s the old tired 400 had no issues. i have considered but i love the carb set up ill run it for now and she how it produces. well not having much luck right now, was very excited on getting my high steer today, popped it all in and not gonna work very well, have clearance issue between the crossmember and drag link bar, and also the bottom of the tre that bolt on the bottom of the pitman arm. will hit the leaf when flexed.
solution? i could cut out the huge crossmember and plate it?
for leaf clearance get a flat pitman arm and try that?
any ideas would help, maybe scrap the whole high steer and try something else. the truck is so close to roll!
could just go backwards and buy a s bar and go stock style, I'm running out of ideas, your input would be greatly appreciated:( http://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/Cruise2010166208.jpg

Should of come out and look at my setup and seen how tight it is , but some options for you is a flater pitman arm and notch out the cross member , weld in haft a 3" tube so drag link can flex into the cross member . Another is to retaper the pitman arm so that tre goes in the top , only gain adout 1.5 " could hepl you with that . Steering solutions in port kells has a big box of pitman arms that might help you , swap me some . Also could have a flater arm here but need some measurements.

well i ended up cutting the bottom of the crossmember out, could have just notched it, but this way when i put rears up front and move my diff forward then i should have enough clearance, capped it off with a 3/8'' plate i made heres a few pickyshttp://i318.photobucket.com/albums/mm417/proskimjb/Cruise2010166238.jpg

were ever you put it other than right at the back of the truck
its going to be a pita to fill
i think rci makes a remote fill setup for them
and jordan you dont want to run your vent like that
you need to run a tube or hose of it in a couple loops
to stop fuel from sloshing out of it
on of camber or hillclimbs or that thing happens
when your glad you put all that tube on it

if ya get a remote fill ya got tons of room and options
what if ya put the cell just infront of diff and drop it between the frame a bit (as up travell allows, i know she flexies purdy like) and go remote fill and build a T shaped box behind the cab and over the tank to the e
nd of the cage. gives ya a shallow area for a tray for shackles and shit that yer always diggin around the bottom of a tool box for. have a tray over the feul cell for that smaller shit, big box behind the cab for bigger shit/ campin gear, mount hilift etc to the lids or sides. prolly find a good spot for an airtank in there somewhere.
