Well since I'm picking it up tomm and doing a couple mod's right away I thought I should make a thread now :p

Main goal is for it to get to every camping spot while being my DD and so Dirka can have a FSRing buddy [15][15][15][15][15][15][15][15]

Toyota checked it out and it mainly just needs new rotors, timing belt and water pump, spark plugs and with the clock and rear interior light not working just small easy stuff. They did a compression test which turned out pretty strong 180,185,180,190,185,170 :party0010: :party0010:

Plan is to get a 3" Revtek suspension lift, 2" body lift with new rear coils and 33's for now. Of course down the road I need front and rear bumpers with sliders but that can wait until next year and of course I need Epic to hook me up with a alarm with auto start if it doesn't have a alarm :dontknow:

The only pic I really have right now, I can't wait to pick her up tomm

get sliders before the body lift. 33s will look too small that high. I had a 1.5" body lift on 35s and it looked perfect. how does the revtek lift give 3" in front?you'll definitely need a diff drop if you want to run a front lift that high.

congrats on the new ride... [36]

Murd0c
08-17-2010, 01:46 PM
yep the susp lift comes with a diff drop with it, that's the basic setup dirka has and his looks perfect. other then his being ome.

So my question is where's the best place to get a new toyota oem water pump and timing belt? as well should I change the thermostat while i'm at it?

these are the tires I'm thinking about getting but some what concerned about the sidewalls since that seems to be the only negative thing about them

those tires are shit! if you go in and talk to any toyota parts guy you will get a bit of a deal. I have at the one in fleetwood but more so in south surrey. talk to the young tattooed guy.

duratracs have been getting favourable reviews from what ive seen. not a full out MT, but a bit more aggressive than an AT. id go with the new MT/Rs in a 35X12.5X17...if i had money...but i dont.

if youre decent with a wrench, id do the TB et all yourself. theres a good write up on 4X4wire i think. would save ya a ton of dough. X2 on hitting up toyota for parts. i go to Jim patteson in surrey. pick up some tune up parts, one at a time. like filter, then plugs..etc. chat em up and ask if they can give you a discount. be a regular with them and they'll hook ya up. i get 30% off i think. if you go to the US, you can get oem parts for über cheap. i got full tune up/baseline parts for my cruiser for much less than half of what i get here...not sure why we get raped up here.

Well I just received the fax from Toyota on the inspection and the minor things I need to charge are

Battery terminal corroded
Fog lights and rear dome light doesn't work while door open
Clock doesn't work
Idle's rough
Leaks around valve cover
Need's plugs
And Timing belt and water pump

I put in a request for them to check the rear diff lock and it works fine [36][36][36][36][36][36]

Can't wait going after work to get her :D

so your not making sense again buddy, you want a suspesion lift, a body lift and a bunch more mods yet you are looking at street tires?

Something does not add up, if your going with the build yer talking about then you need a much more aggressive tire or just leave the truck the stock height and get yourself a winch, bumper and slider first.

but meh what do i know :ballsmack

It was just a sugestion thats all and I need a good street and off road tire since it will be a DD.

What I can't have a lift and street tires [f]

Reece, send a pm to Vince (FZJ80) he has a connection to a US Toyota guy. Works at some dealership in New Mexico, gets smokin deals on parts, and then just ships to "ship happens" in Sumas and just goes across to pick up. Saves a ton of coin that way.

oh, and don't listen to the nay sayers, even though I don't work for Goodyear anymore, I still say those Dura-trac's will be a great all around tire for what you want. or the MT/R for that matter would be a good choice.

just my 2 cents

P

ps, Nice ride bro, congrats

I also have to agree with Paul on the Duratracs most people just say a tire is shit not knowing anything about em because they like what rhey like but for what your lookin for a all around tire that will work hreay of road those will do great and they also have a snowflake icon on them so if you head up to whistler or any mountain and there is a tire check you will get a pass and get
to move on through.....nice looking ride though man....my 2 cents wld be to do the sliders and bumpers first b4 the lift man I wish I wld have then I wld have saved some panels that are now fckrd Reds setup is just awesome really like how it was done and it has been tried and tested Right God lol

Murd0c
08-18-2010, 11:09 AM
thanks guys, it's good to hear that info from people that have been in the tire business for years and know what they are talking about :D

I'm doing the lift now since I have time to do it rather getting rushed down the road since it's my DD. I'm actually thinking about putting sliders on right now since it isn't that much coin and would be the smartest move. I'm going to get the bumper's later no real need for them right now.

So since I need to change the timing belt and water pump and here toyota charges $79 for the belt and $244.50 for the water pump I was looking on ebay and found this deal.

http://cgi.ebay.ca/Toyota-Tacoma-4-Runner-Tundra-T100-3-4-Timing-Belt-Kit-/300457295812?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1997|Model%3A4Runner (http://cgi.ebay.ca/Toyota-Tacoma-4-Runner-Tundra-T100-3-4-Timing-Belt-Kit-/300457295812?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1997|Model%3A4Runner)

Would this be better to get rather going to toyota? I've never bought any parts for a 3rd gen runner before so are there still Aisin parts or what it say's OE parts but I just want to make sure.

Those are not oem... You should be able to get a timing belt for about 50 oem and a water pump for 130 or so. I just did both on my landcruiser for 190 with tax. Open road in richmond can match cruise dans prices allot of the time. If you dont have a part number it always costs more for some reason so get the EPC to get part numbers. I call cruiser dan then open road then world pack see who has the best prices. You may as well do all the belts while you are in there too.

PM me for dans number if you get shipped to washington its free shipping and no tax too

I`d just paint them. Easy enough to do a fresh coat every summer to have them looking great.

paint would be cheaper but coating will last longer on the top portion of it anyways i also got a textured finish

If your just going to paint them and you dont want the paint ot scuff off your going to have to do allot of prep as in cleaning the metal first then a good primer most likely a cpl coats of primer and then paint IMO thats if u want it to look good that is

I would get them welded together and then coat them.....Just dont coat where your gunna weld ask him to stay back from that spot and u can hit it with a rattle can when they r on the truck

A friend of mine had his powdercoated, looks great but when it chips you're screwed in terms of touching it up..

Im gonna spray some cheap bedliner in a can on the tops of my sliders and rear bumper for grip. Then keep on respraying them with tremclad every year.

i use grip tape on my sliders. and many coats of just flat black. easier for touch ups. your tires wont rub on your lift. only place it will rub is on the front fender flare cap, over the bumper during full turn. you'll have to trim a tiny bit off that corner. other than that, no rubbing anywhere else on 285s.

other then the center of gravity being higher just spending more money thats all

whats better, raising the center of gravity by only the weight of the body, or the wieght of EVERYTHING? (excpet axles and tire weight)

I have heard of body lifts causing issues, but i've never had one.

but my pathfinder does have 8 mounts. and i check the bolts fairly often.

d0ubledown
09-03-2010, 10:26 AM
a small body lift is OK. as long as its not something ridiculous like 2-3" then you're fine. i had the 4crawler 1.5" lift in my 4runner. like i said, it was only to clear 315s as ive massaged/grinded out as much as i could on the firewall end of the front tire.

its when people put on 3" pucks with ugly ass bumper/frame gaps which gives the body lift a bad rep. plus, once you separate the body from the frame that much, you'll have to take other things into consideration. like rads, fan shrouds, fuel lines, etc etc.

I was wondering if anyone knows or has done the cup holder mod? Basiclly you replace the center console with a 99 so you can have decent cup holders other then the crap ass ones in the dash.

Here's the link

That cup holder mod requires a lot of cutting. Kinda made me rethink it, but i know what you mean about the shitty ones in the dash.

Couple really good mods you might wanna look into are the Deckplate mod and the ISR mod. Cheap and easy and it gets you a bit more power outta that 3.4L. Something you'll need with the bigger tires.

Thanks for those pointers I will look into that

Well today I had my wheel Alignment done and had my steering wheel fixed since someone put it 180deg off when they connected my steering spacer [f]

Just finished fitting the sliders and off to powder coating they go, I wasn't really going to get them powder coated since if they chip they will rust from underneath but this is my DD that I'm not going to be wheeling real hard with and since it's only $75 for both of them I may as well get it done since it will also make the truck cleaner then a normal paint.

Truck gets a year Next Friday and straight to Rise it goes to get Phil to install a Compustar alarm [36][36][36][36][36]

I have a deckplate in the '97. Got annoying really quick. Gets noisy sounds faster, but it isn't really. The plate has been back in for years.

I wouldn't waste my money on CAI. OEM paper filters are the best imo, especially if you're running in dusty conditions.
Try the deckplate before, it's cheap and reversable. If you get fed up, at least you can plug it. I doubt the CAI flow more aire then the deckpate, I have a 5" hole directly in front of the filter.

I still have an amsiol oil based filter with maintence kit downstairs. If you like to mess with that, it is yours if you pick it up.

If you go with a custom intake, I would look at the volant at burtman industries. I know that the V8 version for the newer 4Runners gets a good review on toyota120.

i wouldnt bother with deckplate and isr mods. complete waste of time & money. i did both, and never took off my deckplate. it sounded annoying, kinda like a wannabe ricer with some loud sucking noise upon full blips. same with any type of oil based air filters like K&N. just stick with oem stuff. change the exhaust if you must, but the intake side of things are fine as is.

the only thing id change to the intake would be a to add a snorkel.

umm...a snorkel and dekplate/isr mods are two completely different things. one is useful and serves a purpose, the other doesnt.

should... i type slower ...for you ...so you can understand the...difference?

I think you better explain to Walt what a snorkel is and what it does...

The snorkel normally does nothing, the ISR makes the intake less restrictive, giving you a few more ponies.
I guess that makes the the ISR one that serves the purpose :dontknow:

a few more ponies is useless if your motor is sucking in water like a chug to alcohol. I guess it's irrelevant if you're just sticking to fsr's and malls. but for those of us that actually take their vehicle off road and do deep water crossings...then it makes perfect sense.

isr doesn't give more ponies btw. all it does is make the suck louder giving you the perception that it might.. hence the name... intake silencer removal.

Gadget on Yotatech pretty well established back in 02/03 I think it was, that you can recover some ponies by making your intake less restrictive.
You should now, I am pretty sure you were around Yotatech back then.

I agree it's not worth the noise and hassle for what the gains are.

As for snorkels, they serve little purpose.

The 3rd gen 4Runners interior will be flooded before you hydro-lock your engine. If you get some water behind the passenger kick panel the ecu will short out anyway.
Deep water crossings with vehicles with carpeting and leather seats are not a good idea to begin with.
4Runner bodies are definitely not water tight.
That's just the way I see it, that's all.

show me some pics of you doin a deep watercrossing

if the water around here is that deep its probably moving to fast to cross, but you have fun with your cool snorkle

heres one. the water wasnt rushing as it was just a water hole over at whipsaw by wells lake. im sure youll be pleased to hear that i got stuck in the deep water & mud. the monster ford behind me on 40s or whatever also got stuck. however my motor was running the whole 10 minutes while i waited for a tug out. i knew my air box was high enough to avoid a hydro lock. but a snorkel is on the list. they're not for everyone...and its probably too cool for you though so i can understand your reluctance to get one.

until then...ill just refrain from playing in deep water...
