Just bought a set of factory 4.88s to swap into the 4cyl 4runner and I noticed that the rear third had a little play where the pinion teeth and ring teeth mesh.

Looks to be just under a mm of back and forth play (if I hold the ring gear and turn the pinion back and forth).

Anyone know of somebody I can take the third to to have it checked out, or tightened up or something?

Thanks!![cheers]

there is supposed to be a little play. not sure how much.

look up the spec online and get a dial indicator from princess auto and mesure it.

im sure jeepthrills or one of those places could do it for you too.

just curious, where did you get the thirds? im keeping my eyes open for a set of 4.88s as well but most of the ones i have seen are for ifs rears

there should be between .007 - .010 backlash.

or there abouts.

Yeah A friend of mine was telling me there should be a tiny bit of play, and he sent me this link:

http://gearinstalls.com/freshen.htm

Im thinking I just need to tighten up the adjuster wheels some to get some of the CBPL back.

I didn't want to get into a whole rebuild thing as im trying to do the gear swap on the cheap. :ballsmack

I got the diffs (IFS front, and rear third) from a friend of mine. They part out 4runners...alot of them haha! But They are pretty much all 2nd gens.

Couldn't you just run two factory rear 4.88s??

or there abouts.

I guess I need a dial indicator then eh

thanks guys![cheers]

ah right forgot about the ifs thing lol. idunno why i just assumed you were talking about solid axle.

problem for me is the solid axle trucks never came with 4.88 stock. as far as i know anyway.

hey 4skin, you saying an ifs rear end is the same third member as a solid axle one? i thouhgt they were a little different.

oh and you still have that ford 300 head for reeseman?

Do you think you could ask them if they could get a rear cargo security shade with brackets? I've been looking for my surf, but have had no luck so far, just like the idea of hiding my gear a bit better from the public. Let me know
Thanks

I think the only thing that might be different is the bolt pattern on the pinion flange.

All 1992-95 pickups and 4runners with a 3vze, auto and 31" factory tire package came with 4.88's

Toyota 8" 3rds are interchangable. The E-locker 3rds will fit with some cutting, grinding, and welding. 4cyl 3rds and 6 cyl 3rds will interchange as a whole, but inside parts are different. All spline counts are the same. Factory 4:88 ring and pinions will only fit in a factory 4:88 3rd. You cannot remove them and put them into a different 3rd. Aftermarket 4:88's you can.
There is a few different flange bolt patterns. Four that I know of. The newer trucks (2005 and up I think) have a different pinion spline count. You can swap pinions between 3rds of the same type, but must use the proper spline count flange.
Don't adjust your 3rds unless you know what you are doing. It's not the best idea to change a worn-in pattern, especially if you don't know what you are doing. Don't remove a pinion flange that uses a crush sleeve. If it's a solid spacer, you're ok.
Factory ratios available for the 8" gears are
3:73, 3:90, 4:10. 4:11, 4:30, 4:37, 4:56, and 4:88.
Aftermarket ratios add 5:29, and 5:71.

Oh, Toyota factory spec is 0.005" to 0.007", while most aftermarket gear manufacturers seem to recommend 0.008" to 0.012".

That's a whole 'nother can 'O worms. YOU try finding reasonably priced parts for an 8" mid pinion, reverse rotation, clamshell IFS diff out of a new truck. ;)

Sorry man, they pretty much deal only with 2nd gen 4runners and 3rd gen pickups. If they ever make the jump Ill post up

Pretty much.
I came to the conclusion a few weeks ago Im just going to swap it in and run it. If it blows up Im good friends with the parts guy (were buddies before he got into it) so Im not worried about returning it.

Thanks for the info!
