if it is open, leave one tire on the ground and then devide the number of times the tire goes around in relation to the '1' rotation of the drive shaft by 2.

Just pull the 3rd and look on the ring and pinion, what type of vehicle is it? Tranny, motor?

Like for instance a Cherokee with a 4.0L and a 5speed will have 3.07 gears?
A Cherokee that has a 4.0L with a auto will have 3.55
2.8L with a 5speed will be 3.73 gears
2.8 with a auto will have 4.10 gears
2.5L with a 5speed will have 4.10 gears as well,

1981 bronco, 351, c6 with tow package. Its a truck I'm buying in the morning, just wanted to make sure I can bolt the front ttb directly into my truck. If its a different ratio, I'll swap the 9" in also and call it said and done

Prolly 3.55 since it's got the 351 in it

most like.y 3.08 or so if its dead on 1.5 for 1 turn.try turning it twice.

this is what your supposed to do for an open diff.

You are going to have a real hard time accurately trying to tell the difference between gearsets. IE: Driveline slop could be the difference between 3.08 and 3.25

Like mentioned, the best way is to pull the carier and count the teeth. Hard to do when wanting to buy, but it's the only good way.
