Perhaps the holes aound the perimeter have been recently redrilled and/or retapped and the swarf was just left there:dontknow:

That means they would have been built with precision and the up most quality.......:D not that im biased or anything  hahaha.

Id agree with Buckin Bronco maybe it was drilled and they didn't clean out the swarf. If my eyes are working correctly in the first picture theres a few fairly large pieces looks like swarf from drilling for sure.

I'd have to agree some hack at some point in time drilled and tapped the plenum mount holes and didn't clean it out after.
Is there thread inserts in them?

this is a quote from pirate 4x4

I had a 4.0 that had chunks in there- it was the remnants of piston rings when a liner dropped so far it peeled the piston rings off in one cylinder. Damned thing drove in to the shop with a helluva miss, but the guy drove it over two hours like that.

then i said "
but how did they make it all the way up there"

then he said

Up through the valves as the engine was running. Destroyed the head on that one cylinder and managed to shoot chunks out the ram pipe and went down the adjacent ones and left marks on the combustion chambers of two other cylinders. Bent the valves a little while it was at it. I've got pics somewhere... I'll see if I can find them.

this is a tough call for me

im only into it for 4500 and the same year and spec model at the dealer across the street is going for 10,000

aside from the motor this thing is in excellent shape and drives like a 4x4 Cadillac

for now it even runs real good seems to be fixing it self the more i drive it
but who know what the future holds

i guess i could prolly take it to a dealer and get 5-6 for it but then what ?? buy another persons headache

or just deal with it and at worst rebuild the whole motor for 2 g and have a good truck :confused0006:

gots some thinking to do i guess

I have worked on a few of these first hand recently.

I would move on, parts are had to find, and expensive when located. no to mention waiting for the parts. english cars have poor wiring in my opinion, lots of gremlins start to come out.

As for the going for 10,000..... it is for sale for 10, but nobody has bought it correct? it is to bad because the seem like nice fancy vehicles, but from what i have seen, they are nightmares. it is to bad really cause they do drive nice.

just my .02[cheers]

Sell it now gonna be endless problems fix the engine and your suspension will go. I dont think there is a good british car out there brits like to over complicate things that should be really simple.
You can get 2002 and below full load rovers from the states for less then 5k.

Sell it fast for 5-6g's or do the motor and hold onto it for a couple of years. They are not much less reliable then anything else in that price range other then a honda civic and contrary to popular opinion they don't have the wiring gremlins the older ones did. And they are a far more capable and practical rig then any toy chev dodge or jeep in that price range.
Parts aren't that hard to find either I can get top end gasket set mains and rings for under a grand by noon tomorrow and thats just an example sure its not chev cheap but its a luxury vehicle and a luxury vehicle always has some pit falls.

Pull that piece of shit gas motor out (the Rover V8 is a piece of useless crap and should only be used as a boat anchor) of it and do a diesel swap (Toyota or Isuzu) you won't be disapointed [cheers]

Funny thing is its an English truck and it is only sold in diesel form over there either 200 ,300TDi or TD5. Kinda tells you something when not even the people who built the motor want to use it. Eric I have a few contacts in the UK that could get you shipped correct a complete running 200 or 300TDi (you could not use the TD5 due to shipping regs) for that Disco its an easy swap and it will drop straight in.

right now she runs like a top but who knows

if it runs really good its not the rings.

pretty obvious when you have rings shredded. you will have 0 comperssion and a dead cylinder.

do a compression check before going any further, will only take ya 30 min or so.

if its running good, then put it up on the market before something else rears its ugly head in. let it be someone elses headache. are you looking for a DDer/FSRer? or did you just get the rover coz of the bro deal and medium duty wheelability? lots of other waay more reliable alternatives out there eric...

i vote for selling it if you want something in that style buy version 2.0 which is the land cruiser same idea but reliable and strong. I saw one of those runnin 31's shit sidegears out of the diff at hut lake and many other land rover shitty storys like that. It takes a certain person to own a range rover we've met a few times i dont think you're that person stick with the jeep and buy a toyota [cheers]

I was doing some thinkin on this.
What I was thinking is how does piston material enter the intake area of an engine?
Its a four stroke engine and by function and design every time the piston goes up the intake valve is closed. So how would piston/ring material get past a closed intake valve and make its way to the plenum?
My conclusion is, it can't. In the case of the other motor you know of perhaps the metal that was found in the plenum was from something else that went further into the motor causing further damage. It's possible someone hypothesized the opposite but it makes no sense to me.
