Lose the mechanical speed controll and get a new motor and battery. Same size motors as todays. You wont have a problem finding them.

You can replace the resistors on the speed controll i used to have to do it all the time before escs came along. Seal your new servos.

Sealing a servo is easy
Use a bit of silicone sealant around the wire harness where it enters the servo case. Apply it completely around the case area where the harness enters, as well as around any creases and screw holes on the case.
Use thick silicon grease around the output shaft, and reinstall the servo horn. The grease will protect the output bearings or bushings, and it will seal the case's internals.

99% of higher end servos come with orings between the two halfs. Its a good idea to seal all your electronics before you go out. Use a balloon zap straps and silicon grease to seal your receiver.

I would sell it rather then upgrade it. atoyot will take good care of her.
