Mine is a 97 3.4L with 297 000 kms.

Ask when the timing belt and waterpump were replaced.

Check for rust:D

Or might be easier to check for steel[cheers]

I don't believe ther were any recalls on the 3.4 l engine.

Not a recall, just good to know when it was done.

Timing belt is officially due at 160k km. It's an non interference engine, so the worst case scenario is a tow bill to get it replaced.
Rear axle seals go quite often, steering racks sometimes need replacement but not for a 100k km at least.

For the rest there are few common problems. Rust is not really an issue with the 3d generation 4Runners.

Yotatech & Ultimateyota have a lot of info about those vehicles.

nothing serious to note with this year runner. i think the 99s have the multi mode (part time 4X, full time 4X4, and awd) tcase, if it does...ensure that the ctr diff locks and unlocks (on gravel or dirt road) smoothly and quickly. there should be a sticker on the fan shroud if the tbelt was done. as arjan mentioned its non interference, so you wont bend any valves should it go.

otherwise, check the usuals. oil condition, under rad cap, suspension pieces like ball joints, steering rack and cv boots..etc. and if theres a lil rectangular button on the dash left of the steering wheel that says RR DIFF LOCK, then its got the oem rear elocker on it. if its a limited with the rear elocker, its got 4.30 gears.
