shitty deal. cops are being pricks in maple ridge. My buddy got one in ridge a few weeks ago. And although lifted.... is a pavement princess. shiny paint, no rust, just a 4inch lift with 33's on shiny rims with no fender flares. One of the nicest 87 4runners i've seen

Frame? Did he actually crawl under and inspect it? And if so, how rusty is it - it is an old Toyota and we all know how reliable those frames were.

I'm curious too, sounds like the cop wasn't being so much the dick but maybe just doing his job? Yah he could have been going after real criminals instead, but if your 4runner stands out in a crowd with obvious violations, whaddya expect would happen? Let's see a few pics.

It suck but a 4 inch lift requires a vi according to regs 10cm and over must have a vi and 4 inches is over 10cm

almost any one of us would fail on that criteria...............if the cops are checking

X2 on the Mud flaps. I run wide flares and wide removable mud flaps, I have been followed lots by rcmp's and never bothered ( knock on wood ). I usually try and hit the carwash on the way back from any wheeling, and keep my Jeep fairly clean nowadays ,way easier to work on a clean truck too, I got tired of trying to work under the truck with lbs of dried mud and crap falling on me!
Shitty deal, but mud does attract unwanted attention sometimes.

Is that what it looked like when he pulled ya over? :confused0006:

most of the time, if you have no flairs or mudflaps, they'll be on you. Those two items are easy for them to spot, and their kinda an indicator as to the driver. If there, your at least trying, and chances are you know what to do and are doing it. No flaps is kinda a fuck you to the rules, making them think there's more to find. Mud flaps are gay, but it keeps em off your ass and it's also a little more respectfull to other drivers. your truck doesn't look too bad, but odds are, no flaps, not enouigh on the cops plate for the day, and so you got a vi. But again, be happy it's not a box 1.; I've seen cleaner/smaller trucks get box 1's.

Your truck shouldnt have to much problem passing.

Why would you drive for 3 weeks with mud on your truck? I wash my shit after everytime. Mud is hell on seals and linkages like sand paper on and moving part. Drys rubber out too.

Removable mud flaps are what I need.. And as for cleaning the truck, I mainly only worry about under the truck. I don't care if the body is covered in mud. Unless, it's huge chunks of mud and will fall off while I'm driving down the road. Or, if I plan to work on it.. I don't wanna lean on a dirty truck.

I don't think my burb would pass a VI, tho.. so I stay away from trouble as much as possible. I did go through a seat belt check tonight, and the cop just waved me through. He didn't notice me slipping it on while I turned the corner and saw him. Probably because he can't really see into the truck.. The bottom of my window is eye level for me. I'm 6'4". And it was pretty dark.

Good luck with passing it. Need to find a good inspection guy.

Officially you are not allowed to weld or drill a frame of a vehicle, If it has been welded the welds have to be x-rayed to pass. Bolting it on would only work if it is through stock frame mounts.

If it has been welded the welds have to be x-rayed to pass.

Is it x-rayed to determine that it (the part/slider) is welded on properly or to check that the process has not compromised the integrity of the frame?

Or both..........

what about xj long arm kits? you auctually cut the upper mounts off and drill about 20 holes into the frame and pinch seams?

shoulda multiquoted this

to check the integrity of the frame, but how many shops auctually have a machine to do that?

bobby b
11-23-2009, 03:52 PM
I thought that cracks would be the result of the frame becoming more 'brittle' at the weld and would show up after some use, or can you actually crack stuff as a result of the fresh weld alone?
The way the metal was cooled after is probably critical too, or...?

just because you can buy a "kit" doesnt make it legal when installed on the vehicle.... im not sure if thats true in that case but yea. radar detectors for example, they are illegal but they still sell em.

Just had a thought, bit of a stretch mind you but are your sliders home fab or are they specific to your truck? If they are specific, any chance they have bolt holes on the brackets that may line up to some stock frame mounting holes?

11-23-2009, 04:07 PM
