i got an 89 f-150 with 302/5 speed, been a good engine so far (bought the truck in aug 08)
pulls my 4runner pretty well, but i am gonna buy a diesel in spring, gas milege sucks, but all in all pretty happy with it.

It pulled jonny6door's 6 door on his triple axle flat deck and it did 70km/h up drought hill in peachland

good motors, but if it's a f150 it probably has the shit tranny behind it. if you have to do the clutch anytime, concider swapping it out for the zf from a f2-350.

what's wrong with thos trannies? I have the exact same rig with the 302/5spd in a 1990.

and as for my motor... i have ridiculous bearing knock in the bottom end and minimal power at 230 000 kms .... but hopefully i'll be able to do a rebuild this winter.

:D

I always wondered what is the diff between late model 5.0's like truck vs mustang vs cougar/tbird. I always just thought the mustang was roller but that doesn't explain the one in the cougar and tbird.

all i know is the truck motors were made for more torque and mustangs etc were for higher hp..maybe siomethin to do with bore and stroke?

Ummmm, if the bore and stroke were different, it wouldnt be a 302 would it?

All the later 302 blocks were the same, just some had different compression, heads and cams.

mustang motor got 9.2:1 forged pistons, a roller cam, headers, dual exhaust
the trucks were 8:1 compression cast pistons, cast exhaust manifolds, single exhaust

the efi 5.0 motor pretty much ran outa steam at 4800rpm in stock form, definitely not an rpm machine
I had a carb'd 85 and it would pull a few more revs but by 5000 she was pretty much outa breathe
I put 351C 1.7 rockers on it to stretch the rpm a bit (its a bolt on), offroad exhaust, n2o, gears, m7003a transmission

The main difference between the truck motor and the mustang motor, as far as I can tell, is the intake. The truck intake is very tall and designed for torque and the mustang intake is short and designed for HP.

But based on internet specs the mustang 5.0 has more HP and more torque and so the cougar/tbird 5.0 is basically the same as the truck and how can are intake decrease hp and increase torque. If you put a smaller intake shouldn't it decrease both?

This is why the Mustang engine has more power. The intake is different as well.

The 5L is a good engine, AOD and M5OD tranny's are crap, ZF-5 is direct bolt in, in place of the M5OD. Its not hard to convert from the AOD to the ZF-5, easy swap, I've done it to my 90 bronco. You can get decent milage out of it depending on how your truck is geared, I get around 19MPG with 4.56's and 35's, revs around 2200ish at 100km/h.

MSD cap, rotor, coil and ford racing plug wires, and a little bit bigger gap on the plug, and a timing bump to 12.5-13.5BTDC helps make it a bit more snapy off idle. Headers make a big difference in the trucks as well.

thanks man how much do headers ususally go for for ford pick ups like flowtechs or somethin?

Cheapo shorty's start at about $150 and go up to around $500 for the bassani's, dont cheap out on them, the cheaper they are the higher the chance they will probably warp on ya. Bassani shortys run around $500 and are ceramic coated and have 3" collectors on them.

is there anything u gotta do special with the headers like go in from the bottom or anything like that cuz i know with most sbc u gotta take the starter out and go in from the bottom on the passenger side etc. thanks?

85-95 Mustang 5.0 engines also got roller cams and roller lifters (trucks actually got them around 94 or 95) but use the 351W firing order.

Also a common mistake I see or hear of all time is people swapping Mustang stock cylinder heads onto their trucks LOL. The 87-93 Mustang engines have the EXACT same heads as the trucks. Casting #E7TE

Nope, nothing special, lots of room on these trucks to put them in.

truck motors werent the HO ones in the mustang, My buddys carb'd 5.0L pretty much stock made power right up to 6400,

in 85 the HO was rated at 210hp at 4400 rpm
in 88 it was rated at 225hp at 4200rpm

I buzzed mine over 6000rpm quite a few times (as the motorsport tranny had a huge space between 4th 1:1 and 5th .63:1 gear so to get the rpm drop to be above 3000rpm you had to really wind it up in 4th I did buy a .80 5th gearset but never installed it)
but to claim a motor that makes peak rated power at 4400rpm is still making power at 6400 is quite a stretch
the efi pull real good from 3000-4800rpm stock, the carb was 3000-5000rpm, not a lot going on over 5000 with stock heads and cam

i hope so hope the motors are better then the m5OD trannys

If the m5od goes swap in a zf-5, its a direct bolt in, dont have to change a thing.

ya my trannys screwed rite now..the throw out bearing wont work properly which is bullshit it sucks

I had a 302 from a 94 in my rig and it was pretty solid even after swamping it a few times and the borg warner tranny im still using behind a windsor and it seems pretty bulletproof.

I've got a 92 2WD F150 as my DD,302 with headers duel exaust and flowmaster mufflers, made a massive power difference.I liked it so much I bought a 90 4WD with the same engine to swap into my yj.
