Im trying to make a deck on my 79 4x4.
Im using light angle iron , nothing to heavy.
I have a Lincoln Weld Pac 100 mig welder.
I cant get the wire to feed out even, its always jerking out and hittting my work so Im making real crappy welds.
It goes tap tap tap on my angle iron as Im trying to weld it.
I thought it was me to start with but now Im not so sure?

Sounds like the liner is fucked

And when the liner is fucked you have to buy that whole new cable?

Check that the wire is in the right groove on the roller.

There are usually two grooves on the feed roller.

make sure that the wire you are using match the grove on the roller.

Check the tension on the wire feed roller.

point the mig gun into you're gloved hand and pull the trigger.

the wire should poke yer hand fairly hard and then stop. the wire is now slipping on the wheel.

This is so that if the wire welds it's self to the nosel you wont get the birds nest in side the machine.

It' kind of a balance between to much tension on the wheel and not enough.

Not enough and it will be jerky like you have described.

If all that is good than it's the liner and that is replaceable at you're local welding supplier.

what wire U using any thing over .030 on a 100 is too big

check to make sure you don't have a crap spool of wire (the wire wound shitty and clamping it'self on the role, or the wire has rust on it)

make sure the drive rolls are tight enough

check to see if the contact tip is the right size for the wire and is clean

pull out your liner and see if their are any hard kinks in it or blow air through it with a cloth at one end to see if shite comes out

check your wire speed make sure it isn't too slow or fast

make sure the steel you are welding is CLEAN!!! shit on the steel like rust or paint will be a pain in the ass to weld through

my advice is to buy a bigger welder. it makes building stuff alot easier

grounded properly and not to far from where you are working

Nope liner is a plastic tube that gets inserted inside of the whip. Go to any welding supply store they will be able to give you a replacement.

is the wire rusty?
if so it is garbage and has ruined your liner :)

Thanks for all the ideas.
The only one I think might be it is the liner as everything else looks OK from what you have all told me.
How hard is liner to change?

its simple pull the old one out insert new one and done

also if the voltage is to high and you have to much wire stickin out, you heat up the wire to fast and melt it faster then it feeds out.

also keep the line from the gun to the welder as straight as possible. a bend may cause to much friction in the liner and cause problems

Make sure you have the tip of the gun a maximum of 1/2" from your weld surface. 1/4" is optimum. I kept doing this when I 1st learned how to weld (gun too far from surface) and it did similar things to what you describe.

Also... just point the gun into the air and feed 5 or 6 feet of wire. Watch it as it comes out... does it come in a smooth motion, or all jerky?

Thanks some more ......................

Ive got a Miller electric buzz box and I can weld ok with it.
Not the greatest but I can usually get the job done.
But this mig just screws me around steadily. but Im going to try some of your ideas , maybe its me and the machine screwing up?

okay first point the gun up in the air and pull the trigger to run a couple feet of wire out (watch carefully) to if its comming out smoothly. That will determine if it's mechanically the machine or not. Then I can point you into the right troubleshooting direction.

I am a welder by trade.

whats the wire look like when commin out the nozzle and hittin your steel?
If its a globe clibmin towwards your nozzle then your wire speed is to low and or your voltage to high if its just bouncin and spattering then its commin out to fast.
Your liner is probably fine whats your gas flow as well?
Not enough gas and youll get to much spatter and bouncing with a shitty arc specially if your welding outside.
030 wire thickness is fine in that machine although it would work better with 023

best advice to give you as a new welder is bacon

make it sound like bacon

Im using flux core wire 030.
New roll.
Lots of "bouncing and splattering " going on.
Half my wire bounces away on the ground?

We use flux core with gas at work on the big mig...works excellent.

Ken, bring it by if you're down this way.

Hell no, it works like a charm.

It can weld 3/16 and even get a good bead on 1/4.

its 110v and about 10 years old.

But it needs to stay warm and dry otherwise it gets cranky.

I have replaced the rollers, bearings, tensoner etc.

where abotus is "WL" ? if its in teh lower mainland ill come by some time and take a look at it.
on the whole gas and flux core thing, your both right and wrong

there are 12 different classifications of FCAW electrode wires. 4 require a shielding gas, 2 or 3 (dont feel like digging my book out) can be used with or without, and the others do not require any.
its a bit of a piss off when people start spouting their mouth about stuff they know nothing about and start assuming stuff as fact.
so please dont be a dick unless you know what your talking about
