got myself a new tow rig project, it arrived in the driveway today. :D [36]

Now you guys know me I pretty much do everything overkill so the tow rig is no exception . . . some stats . . .

89 Freightliner, Cat 3406 inline 6 cyl 14.6L 425hp, Fuller RTO 14715 15spd transmission tandem rear axles, air ride rear suspension. The truck runs and drives needs a couple of minor repairs and it could go back into service.

the project part . . . I am going to pull off the Freightliner cab and put on a Kaiser M715 cab in place of. I am going to turn the M715 into a crew cab.

The 3406 engine is WAY to big to fit into the FSJ engine bay so that will come out but I am undecided yet as to what deisel engine will replace it, the Cummins 6CT 8.3L inline 6 is at the top of the list so far. It is in the same engine group as the Dodge Cummins(6BT) so I beleive the 6CT will be similar in size as the Dodge Cummins just alot more power.

I will keep the 15 spd tranny and add a 5 ton transfer case and a 12000 lb frt drive axle. I will also remove the forward tandem axle to make it a single rear axle and I think I will try to use the air ride suspension off of the axle I remove to install the new frt drive axle and get rid of the frt leaf springs.

So here is the truck I bought

and check out how it was delivered[36]

thats going to be awesome when its done[cheers]

why don't you remove the rear tandem axle and chop the frame so the wheelbase isn't going to be so long?

I am going to remove the frt tandem because it has the pass through drive for the rear axle then I will move the rear axle forward to whatever wheelbase I decide and cut off the excess frame behind the axle.

Do you really not think that this project won't be registered heavy enough and be capable of hauling 2 or 3 trucks on a real trailer. It has a 15 spd trans and the engine going in will be about 900 ft/lbs of torque with no mods and it will be keeping a 5th wheel set up.

That's Jim Davis driving the crane truck he owns a couple of crane trucks and runs them through Pheonix, he is an old friend of my old man, from when dad used to sand and mud race.

C is not the same as a B.
C is closer to a real engine in that it has removeable liners, but I dont think it can use a Jake Brake
if it was me I would be either keeping the cat or seeing if a little L-10 or M11 cummins would fit
you can easily hotrod an L10 and it has a real cummins fuel system so a real Jake brake as well.

I am not sure I would like to have it done for next summer so I can use it for getting the CJ around next season. But I don't have the M715 yet, I have a friend that collects military trucks he knows where one is has looked at it but it is a guy that one of his friends knows so I am having trouble getting the number to go look at it. So I think the plan right now is to fix the brakes and make sure everything on the Freightliner works before I take it apart.

Mike, you must have run a few of these smaller deisels what do you think would make a good one to run. I would like to use either a Cat or a Cummins, they seem to be what most medium trucks run, and somewhere in the 7 to 9 liter range to try to keep it small enough to reasonably squeeze into the FSJ engine bay. And some kind of engine brake would be nice. I don't really know anything about the industrial deisels yet and obviously even less about interchange and physical sizes. I do know that the tranny has an SAE 1 clutch housing on it right now and that I can "easily" change it to an SAE 2 to make mating it to a smaller engine easier.

those "b" model cats are better on fuel than the new models of comparable size, why is it ISX red? was the last owner hoping to camoflauge it as a cummins? that thing is going to be a monster,i may know where a big 4wd steer axle may be ,do yourself a favor and ditch that rear suspension they dont ride so good, and good luck with your new project mikey!

Nutbar

I do need a frt drive axle and huge Tcase, I don't even care if the Tcase is a 2 spd the double low in the tranny should be slow enough for anything that this rig would see. Let me know on the axle Merv.

As far as the engine goes I am taking the 3406 out because I want something smaller that will actually "fit" the FSJ's engine bay without extensive body mods. I don't mind doing a little fire wall reshaping and/or rad support mods for bigger rad and an intercooler but that Cat is massive, I would have to stretch the nose and a rad big enough for it would never fit.

I have a 99 Dodge 24V Cummins but I think that will be a little too small and a little under powered for some of the towing I want to do with this truck, and I don't want to mod it to the point of unreliability to get the power I need

Nothing that was worth noting, collected a couple of small parts, did a little parts stripping but I need to finish the Comanche before I start this "large" undertaking and the Comanche turned into a larger project than first anticipated.

Not sure if I will register it as the kaiser or the freightliner but either way it will be done as a medium or heavy truck, I want to legally be able to tow 3 or 4 trucks on a trailer behind it. So it will fall under regular inspection scrutiny

if you register it as a freightshaker, plan on spending a couple grand on a DOC install. depending on the year of truck, one may be required, or will be soon. look into the regulations regarding engine swaps and DOC's
